Thank you so much for following me. I love having people join me on my
wayward journey. I am based in Texas. Where do you live in France? Any
suggestions or comments you might have are always appreciated. DAX
am living in Bretagne (North West), but I am from South-West (Biarritz
and its surfers, the Basque Coast, and Occitania). My ancestors are
Argentinian Amerindian, Marranes/Conversos (i don’t know the english
word, but they were spanish jewish who became catholics en 1492, and
were persecuted after), and occitans (cathars / south french who were
victims of albigeois crusades in 13° century). I am a metis
(multi-racial as you say into your country).
I am a postcolonial and queer writer, about my research subjects
(identity questions : ethnicity, LGBTQ, plus all what build our identity
[emotions, spirit, etc…]). But, i make research too about landscape
* Note that at that time i defined myself as queer, to show my interest and agrrement in queer theories, but i have abandoned that definition since that time, because i am not queer myself, and it has created some misunderstanding.
Your life sounds so interesting. I have been to Mont Saint-Michel, but I
did not have a chance to see more of Brittany. Maybe someday. I am
Cajun french originally from New Orleans, but my family came to Texas
long before I was born. Do you know the town in south-west France
called Dax? I was named after this town. I am ashamed that I do not
know French or more about where I came from even though I have been to
France many times. I love to travel and paint, but I also design
Me : Dax is in the landes, “departement” near of biarritz. When i was young, i went to Dax (famous for its ferias).
Great a french from the diaspora !
Do you have some photos of the accessories you design ?
Have a good night (it’s night for me, it’s 21h30), and to the pleasure to another conversation !
Since now ut picturia poesis is one of my favourite arts. I love this
idea of a dialogue between a picture and words. So your work reminds of
how R.E.M.'s songs used to be written: the guys would create music, give
it to Michael and he would write lyrics. Music inspired Michael's
picturesque poetry, and photography inspires yours. Btw, I liked your
words that "photography is the modern paint". I like to find words that I
agree with. Never lose inspiration in your work ;)
Me : Thanks a
lot ! during the newt days, i am going to start the translation of my
texts and poemms for the Miscellanées, like that you can understand. I agree with you. and before doing ut picturia poesis, i work over
the relations between music and words/imagination (music inspiring me
some stories i write, with no relations with the subject of the music). i
always do. i can’t explain here, because it’s really complicated to do.
but i have an interview to answer, and i think i try to explain that !
and i will translate the interview in english and publish it here.
Me : As allthisrunningaround asks me and for REM / Michael Stipe’s fans / Thomas Dozol’s fans, and for all photos’ and poetry fans, i present my artistic work on tumblr. I went on tumblr to make a dialogue between photos and words, as a modern ut picturia poesis.
What’s ut picturia poesis ? The ut picturia poesis means “poetry is as paint”, an Horace expresion, which was after (during Renaissance) changed in “paint is as poetry”. And now ut picturia poesis means both of them. That permitted a dialogue between poetry and paint. The peak of this art was during the XVI° to XVIII° centuries. If you want to read more informations about ut picturia poesis and “poétique”, you can read this text, a french university text explaining the history of ut picturia poesis. You can read other texts about that : english wikipedia, french little text.
As photography is the modern paint, i decided to work the ut picturia poesis on photos, the new paint. That ‘s why i open a tumblr, to find beautiful, and inspiring photos to dialogue via poems i write.
The second thing that definitly decide me to do that work, is an interview i made with the great painter Jacques Cauda, founder of the pictorial movement “Surfiguration”. He works too about the ut picturia poesis. You can read the interview.
It permits me to study how a photo can inspire a poet, how words come from a photo, even if sometimes, words can have no link to the photo, which could inspire them. But you know, inspiration is the queen.
For the moment, i have written texts on Thomas Dozol, me, jessic-eh and Deadguru ‘s photos. There is not a lot of photos and texts because i have just started my work (and i make a lot of other works on top of that : interviews of various artists [musicians, and music producers, writers, painters, etc…], writting my differents books, etc…).
Poesie Webnet published one of the poem i wrote on Thomas Dozol’s photo “Le jardin”. Poesie Webnet is the most important and serious website of french poetry (for all the francophonia area). My texts and poems are in french, but if you want , i can translate them, into english.
To read my work, i had to go the "mes publications" page and "visual art" page. My tumblr work is named “les miscellanées”. On this page, you can find the other poems, Poesie Webnet published, and videos of two texts i wrote made by a friend, who made videos fom texts for blind people (to permit them to have access to culture). You can find too articles i write (for the moment the article about aids in the 80’s). If you want to read the interviews and critics i make, you have to go here.
I really liked your interview especially when you said that sometimes
you choose to give absolutely no clue about the gender of a character,
because it is up to the reader to take power, to be the creator of his
own reading. So your readers can easily play themselves. Such a
fantastic idea! I wish I could be a writer, but it would be difficult
to choose between art and literature, so I hope to just combine the two
together. You give me inspiration. DAX
Me :Oh thank you a lot ! I am
happy that you appreciate the interview, and the play between my readers
and me ! that’s important for me, because it’s a manner to show how
normal are transidentity, LGBT life , … and having power when you are a
reader. I love sharing power !
